How AI Search Is Changing SEO: ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews
Ask your customers where they last researched a purchase and a growing number will not say Google. They will say ChatGPT, Perplexity, or the AI summary that now sits on top of the search results themselves. The question for every business is simple: when the machines answer, do they mention you?
What actually changed
For twenty years, search meant one thing: a ranked list of links, and a fight for position on it. AI search collapses that list into a single synthesized answer with a handful of citations. Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT with browsing, Perplexity and Gemini all follow the same pattern: the answer is the interface, and only a few sources get named.
That changes the economics of visibility. Position four on a results page still gets clicks. The fifth-best source for an AI answer gets nothing, because the model only cited three.
How AI systems choose what to cite
Language models do not rank pages; they retrieve and synthesize. When someone asks a buying question, the system pulls candidate sources, weighs how clear, verifiable and authoritative they are, and quotes the ones it trusts. In practice, sources that win citations share traits:
- Direct, quotable claims. Pages that answer the question in the first paragraph get lifted; pages that bury the answer under a thousand words of preamble do not.
- Entity clarity. The system has to know exactly who you are, what you do and where. Consistent brand facts and structured data feed that understanding.
- Verifiable authority. Mentions on sources the models are trained on and retrieve from, industry publications, data-backed studies, trusted directories, act like votes.
- Clean technical foundations. If a crawler cannot parse your site, a retrieval system cannot quote it. The boring fundamentals still gate everything.
SEO is not dead. It grew a second front.
Here is the part most commentary gets wrong: AI visibility is not a replacement for SEO, it is built on top of it. The same crawlable site, the same authoritative content, the same entity signals that rank you on Google are the raw material AI systems retrieve from. What changes is the format: content now needs to be structured so a machine can lift the answer cleanly, and measured against a new question, not “where do we rank” but “how often are we cited”.
What to do about it this quarter
Three moves matter more than everything else right now:
- Benchmark your AI presence. Take the twenty questions your buyers most often ask, put them to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google with AI Overviews, and record who gets cited. That is your competitive map.
- Restructure your highest-value pages. Lead with the answer, support it with data, mark it up with schema. Make every important claim quotable in isolation.
- Fix entity signals. Align your name, description and offerings everywhere they appear, and back them with Organization schema, so every system agrees on who you are.
Citation patterns are forming now, and early authority compounds. The brands that treat AI search optimization as a channel this year will be the default answers in their category next year, and the default is very hard to displace.
